Moments Away from Instant Orthodontics
DO YOU KNOW AN ADULT (perhaps you) who has crooked, protruding, and stained teeth? Some individuals who once wore braces are disappointed to discover discolored or decayed areas where the brackets were once attached, or that later, some or all of their teeth shifted back to their previous positions. There are also many who never wore braces, but have always yearned for that dazzling and perfect dream smile. "Instant orthodontics" is the term used for a cosmetic dental procedure that repositions crooked or protruding teeth to ideal positions using veneers, crowns, bonding, or combinations of techniques. Compared to the long process of wearing braces, the results are practically instant - often needing only one or two visits. Instant orthodontics can be a fast way to obtain that beautiful smile, and in many cases, faster also means better.

While not intending to malign the process of braces - especially
for younger people - one reason why some adults may choose
instant orthodontics (perhaps even after having worn
braces at one time) is that adult teeth can
be more difficult to move. Often, the more pressure that is
applied to adult teeth, the more resistant the tooth is to
change.
Another consideration is post-treatment stabilization of teeth once they have moved into a new position. After braces, stabilization can be difficult to maintain since teeth tend to move back into their previous positions. When braces are removed, it is common to wear a retainer or to have bars bonded to the back of teeth to maintain their new positions. With instant orthodontics, roots of the teeth remain in original position, so the new teeth easily maintain their position without additional processes.
Oftentimes, patients do not have enough room for their
teeth in the space available (hence the reason their teeth
are crooked in the first place), and the cosmetic dentist
must precisely spread out the space among the teeth to create
a proper and straight alignment. Protruding teeth that have
moved into a backward position require different alignment
and shaping than teeth that have moved into a more forward
position - all while maintaining an exact match with each
other. The position of the gum line is an important consideration,
too, since sometimes a tooth position can cause the gum
line to be higher or lower depending on whether the tooth
is further forward or backward.
The process of creating crowns and veneers in instant orthodontics
is entirely different than that of placing traditional crowns,
veneers, and bonding. During the first visit or before creating
each new crown or veneer, the cosmetic dentist will create
a model of the patient's mouth and teeth to demonstrate
to the patient the new alignment. To move teeth perfectly,
the cosmetic dentist must have high 3-dimensional aptitude
and the ability to visualize the end result. In preparing
each new tooth, the dentist must further determine how much
tooth structure to remove.
While the permanent crowns and veneers are being created with great precision and in multiple steps, the patient wears temporary crowns and veneers in the newly straightened positions. The patient's smile is improved immensely, even while wearing the temporaries."
One more advantage of instant orthodontics is that
teeth can be permanently whitened if the patient wishes.
The patient can choose to keep the color of the original
teeth or have the new color a few, or many, shades whiter.
With crowns and veneers there is never a need to be concerned
that teeth will stain or become yellow.
During the second visit, the new alignment of teeth is completed with placement of final porcelain crowns and veneers. The end result is beautifully positioned straight teeth in two visits without the long-term, time-consuming visits of traditional orthodontic treatment.
In over 28 years of cosmetic dentistry experience, I've performed and observed the long-term, excellent results of hundreds of instant orthodontics cases. With instant orthodontics, patients' dazzling and dynamic new smiles remain stable and beautiful for decades to come.
